Five Miles North of Middlesboro

A lake nestled in the foothills just outside town greets our fly-out squadron just north of Middlesboro, KY.

Approaching Middlesboro, KY

These are the rugged hills in the immediate vicinity of Middlesboro, Kentucky, home of the Lost Squadron Museum and the P-38 "Glacier Girl". The hills of the Cumberland Gap National Historical Park lie in the distance to the right.

Chapter 174 Squadron ( I )

This squadron of 5 Chapter 174 aircraft made it to Middlesboro without getting lost. Left to right, Terry Taylor's Cardinal RG, Gary Collins' Cessna 170, Don Reasoner's RV-6, Eric Rood's Cherokee Six rental and Lee Jewell's Citabria.

Chapter 174 Squadron ( II )

Another shot of Terry's, Gary's and Don's aircraft.

Chapter 174 Squadron ( III )

Eric's Cherokee and Lee's classic Citabria.

What's so funny?

Bob, Scott, Don and Lee share a laugh with a museum staffer.

"Glacier Girl" Power Plant

The left wing's power plant shows off the high quality of the reconstruction job found throughout the aircraft.

"Glacier Girl" Instrument Panel

This is the original instrument panel, somewhat degraded after 50 years below the ice cap.

"Glacier Girl" Panorama

This composite of 2 separate photos captures the full beauty of the P-38. Note the high performance "Juan Valdez" spinner on the right engine.

The "Never Lost" Fly-Out Squadron's Pilots and Crew

Left to right, front row Gary Collins, Don Reasoner, Bob Porter, Norm Beaudette. Back row Eric Rood, Jack Catlin, Mark Webb, Terry Taylor, Scott Hersha and Lee Jewell.

Back to the Present

Just west of Irvine, Kentucky and the Kentucky River, as it meanders toward the southeast into the Daniel Boone National Forest. This photo, as well as the other aerial photos in this gallery, was taken on the return trip to Clermont County, from the rear seat of Lee Jewell's Citabria.
