EAA Chapter 174 TALESPINNERS June, 2003 From the President
I went to visit Chapter 174 member Kevin Kinney at his workshop on Good Friday. Kevin has displaced his and his wife’s cars from their small two-car garage. In their places an airplane is taking shape. Kevin is a classic EAA success story. I wish we, Chapter 174 that is, could take credit for his success, but honestly I must conclude that his success is a greater reflection of Kevin’s (and others like him) personality, drive, and motivation than it is anything we have done to assist him. Nonetheless we can all learn something from Kevin’s progress. Some of you will recall a Sunday two years ago when a new/prospective member stepped up and introduced himself to the group. He said he was interested in building a Zenith Zodiac. I remember talking to Kevin at that time and figured he was probably like me and would fritter away the years talking about building the plane and never actually do anything about it. Not long after that first meeting Kevin told me he had taken a trip to the Zenith factory in Mexico, Missouri to test fly the plane. Shortly after the test flight he must have taken delivery of the kit. I’m not sure exactly when, but he has made great progress. All of that was 18-months ago. As of this Spring Kevin has substantially finished two wings, a rudder, horizontal tail, vertical tail, two ailerons and is part way through the fuselage. He freely admits to making a few mistakes, but seems to take them in stride as part of the learning process. I know his lessons are being shared with other local Zodiac builders. We could all learn much from Kevin and his spirit. Congratulations to him and others like him. Tim Fry, Chapter President
Minutes From the May Chapter Meeting President Tim Fry called the May meeting to order at 2:15 PM outside the terminal building at Clermont County Airport. There were no minutes from the April Meeting as the secretary was still returning from Sun 'n Fun. Treasurer Elizabeth Szoke read the treasurer's report which showed $203.39 in checking, $1352.74 in savings, and $6481.61 in the CD. VP Tom Jenkins reported that the Young Builders were meeting every other Wednesday in the Hawk building. Brian Nickles is currently leading in the construction of a composite rudder. Ray Kneipp had nothing new to report on the library. Scott Hersha said the new roster will be completed by the end of the year. Bill Murphy is taking photos of all the members for the roster. Tim welcomed visitors Tom Boehmer, Paul Puehler and Dennis Teague. Mike Franzago asked for articles for the newsletter. Bill Thomas asked for input form last year's picnic committee for this year's picnic. Gary Collins discussed upcoming meeting programs. Phil Cady asked for more volunteers, both pilots and ground support, for the June 14 Young Eagles Day. Tim talked about a request form a New York film maker to film builders working on their planes and then flying them to Oshkosh. Tim reported that Chapter 48 in Moraine is asking for volunteers to help at the Dayton International Airport Airshow in July. Lee Jewell, Chapter Secretary
Hearing Study One of the Scientists in our lab is conducting a study looking at the ability of people who have hearing losses to understand speech while wearing hearing protection. Each person gets a free hearing test. Those who qualify for the study will receive a small token of thanks in the form of some cash. Call Rick Davis, EAA Chapter 174 member. |
