Still Airworthy

Former "What's New" Notices of Ongoing Interest.  These notices have all appeared in earlier editions of our web site.  They are maintained here for newer patrons to review and for their potential ongoing interest to our members.

bulletHow to win $10,000,000.  Just be the first in your neighborhood to build and fly a manned vehicle to just over 100 km twice within 14 days, and you could win a cool 10 million bucks!  Check out the X-Prize web site for details.
bulletQuick and Easy Great Circle Distances.  Last year, AirNav.com added morning and evening civil twilight times to their airport information pages - a nice convenience for early morning and late evening flights.  Did you know that you can also get great circle distances between any two airports?  Just find the page for the destination airport, then look just below the map or airport picture at the upper right of the page, and type in the airport identifier for the departure airport.  Click Calculate Distance and the page will display the great circle distance in nm (just below the map/picture).  Contributed by Norm Beaudette.
bulletScott Hersha's RV-6 Sees First Flight!  Read Scott's account of how his first flight went in his newly completed (well, all but the paint) RV-6.
bulletNew AirVenture Museum Website.  The EAA AirVenture Museum recently inaugurated a brand new website, filled with information about the museum's collections, educational programs and flight operations.  It also contains some exciting interactive features for the kids - big and small.  Check it out!

bulletUFO Sighted in Mojave Desert!  Check out this Scaled Composites web site for some fascinating facts and photos of Burt Rutan's recently uncovered Space Ship One manned suborbital spacecraft and the White Knight high-altitude airborne launch vehicle.  Don't delay - get your space ride tickets now! Contributed by Gary Collins.
bulletNASA Aviation Safety Reporting System (ASRS) Forms on Web Site.  NASA's ASRS web site now provides a convenient location for downloading that all-important Form ARC 277B for reporting a safety situation/event.  If you think you may have inadvertently caused an unsafe aviation circumstance, this is the form you'll want to use to "fess up".  All pilots should become familiar with the benefits of this important program.  Advisory Circular 00-46D describes the program.  Note that all identifications on the form are eventually removed and anonymity is assured.  Note also that the form does NOT provide immunity in the case of a reportable accident.  Finally, members should be aware that this form as well as many other useful forms are available on the EAA website, on the Government Relations page.  Contributed by Norm Beaudette.
bulletISZ has an AWOS!  Blue Ash airport (ISZ) now has a full-function AWOS facility - with winds, visibility, altimeter and cloud conditions updated by the minute.  Call 513-794-1520 or use 118.475 MHz in flight.  Contributed by Lee Jewell.
bulletAirNav.com Reports Civil Twilight.  Want to make sure you're legal for night flight?  Remember that qualifying night flights must occur between evening civil twilight and morning civil twilight.  Now you can get daily civil twilight hours on every airport page in AirNav.com.  Click here to see the page for Clermont County (I69), and look over to the right of the page, under the airport photo.  Contributed by Norm Beaudette.
bulletPhoto ID: Don't Fly Without It.  Remember the acronym ARROW: Airworthiness, Registration, Radio license (no longer required), Operating manual, and Weight and balance?  Well now you can add either G, P, or I (Government, Photo or ID) to those letters.  (You decide where.)  As of October 28th, it is now a violation of FAA regulations to fly an airplane without a government-issued photo ID.  The new ruling falls under 14 CFR Part 61.  Read the exact ruling here.
bulletAircraft Type Organizations.  Got a question about an airplane you own or are thinking of buying?  Aircraft type clubs often offer a wealth of information.  Check out the new list of aircraft type clubs on our Aviation Links page.  Contributed by Norm Beaudette.
bullet Multifunction Flight and Engine Monitoring System.  Check out the new Model IK2000TM flight & engine monitor by I-K Technologies, billed as a state-of-the-art, affordable glass cockpit system component for the experimental builder/pilot.  (The IK2000TM is not currently STC-ed or PMA-ed for general installation in certificated aircraft.)
bulletWACO Restoration Facility.  Check out the Waco Classic/Centennial Aviation web site!  Visitors can see 1930's style biplanes being built and many restoration projects in process at the plant, where tours are welcome.  Located at Kellogg Field in Battle Creek, MI, this might make a nice all-day (200 nm) fly-out this Spring!
bulletCollision Avoidance for a Song!  Check out the Monroy ATD-200 Collision Avoidance System, priced at $695.00, complete with a female voice to let you know when you're just a bit too close (to another airplane, that is).  Lee Jewell saw one of these at Blue Ash Airport recently and was quite impressed!
bulletChapter 174 Receives Official 501(c)(3) Recognition!  On July 15th, 2002, the IRS granted our Chapter tax-exempt recognition under section 501(a) of the Internal Revenue Code as an organization described in section 501(c)(3).  The recognition opens the way for receiving donor tax-deductible donations to further the future growth and development of the Chapter.  Congratulations are in order for Stu Faber and Norm Beaudette for pursuing the application to a successful conclusion!  Norm anticipates putting together a committee, later in the year, to oversee the important, ongoing supervision of our charitable status, and to ensure that we consistently comply with IRS requirements.  Anyone interested in joining the team is encouraged to call or e-mail Norm.
bulletAccolades Never Cease for Paul Gould's Chief!  Once again, Paul Gould's beautifully restored Aeronca 11AC Chief has taken home the gold - a prestigious Gold Lindy, that is - and once again as Classic Grand Champion, at AirVenture 2002, in Oshkosh.  Members will recall that Paul also won Classic Grand Champion at Sun 'n Fun in April at the annual EAA fly-in, in Lakeland, Florida.  Congrats again, Paul and keep her flyin'!
